Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. And this treasure is much more than just a singular monument. Many towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau-and-canyon panorama. Experience walls red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep, soaring eagles, or any number of other animals and wildlife.

Activities

Colorado National Monument has 32 square miles of fascinating landscape, from deep canyons to soaring cliffs. Colorado National Monument is a hidden gem offering a varied array of activities for visitors of all ages, abilities, and interests. Sightseeing, hiking, biking, and ranger-led programs are just a few of the exciting choices awaiting you. Junior ranger programs are also available.  These activities are fun at any age.

Camping

Visitors are welcome to camp within Colorado National Monument at the Saddlehorn Campground near the Visitor Center (towards the Fruita Entrance) or in the backcountry with a permit.

Scenic Drive

Breathtaking views, towering monoliths, balanced rocks, and steep red-walled canyons unfold before you on the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive. The park, a geological marvel, was carved by wind, water, and freezing/thawing over millions of years.

 

Directions to Colorado National Monument

From Grand Junction Regional Airport: Follow the signs from the airport to Horizon Dr.  Follow Horizon Dr. south, past I-70 and into town.  From the round-a-bout, head south on 12th street.  Take 12th street south to Grand avenue.  Turn right on Grand avenue.  Head west to monument blvd.  Turn left on monument blvd.  Stay on Monument blvd until you reach the rangers station.

For travelers going westbound through the Grand Valley: Take Highway I-70 to Grand Junction, and take Exit 31 (Horizon Drive). Follow the same directions as if coming from Grand Junction Regional Airport (above)

For travelers going eastbound through the Grand Valley: Take Highway I-70 to Exit 19 (Fruita) and go south on Highway 340 to the west entrance, which is approximately three miles from Fruita. The visitor center and campground are four miles up from the west entrance.
