Fruita
|
Located a mere 10 miles North/West of Grand Junction, Fruita maintains its small town feel.
Officially founded in 1884 by William Pabor, it attempted to mirror the Greeley Commune on the East slope with a unique circular park in the middle of town for community meetings and events. Here I thought that Fruita was the innovator of the circular intersection popular through out Grand Junction now days. Another unique carry over from the Greeley Commune was the provision that no liquor would be sold or manufactured in the city limits which stuck until the late 1970's.
As the name implies Fruita was founded on agriculture but has evolved over the years, at one point hosting a rather odorous petroleum refinery. But the big switch is now in motion to becoming a popular tourist destination with its close proximity to the Colorado National Monument, premier mountain biking and hiking trails, world renowned paleontology sites and museum and a host of popular festivals to include, of course, the Fruita Fall Festival.
